Super Mario Brothers’ Enemies

We take a look at some of the biggest, baddest Super Mario Brothers’ enemies…

Piscine Perils

Mario is particularly vulnerable underwater, since he has limited mobility and cannot stomp the foes beneath him. All of the foes in this section are vulnerable to Fire Mario’s fireballs, but other Mario forms should focus on evasion. Cheep-Cheeps are easy to dodge, since they are oblivious to your presence, but Cheep-Chomps and Deep-Cheeps will actively pursue you. Only Cheep-Chomps can turn around, though – the others will give up the chase if you get behind them.

Nautical Nightmares

Sushi swim straight ahead, and although they won’t pursue you actively, it will take some nimble swimming to weave through their schools. Most Unagi cannot leave their holes, but they will snap at you if you get too close. If they are guarding an item, swim slightly above or below them to provoke a snap, then grab the item when they retract. Giant Unagi are indestructible and consume everything in their path, so the choices are simple – flee or die!

Brothers-at-Arms

You won’t encounter Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros. often within levels, but the Hammer Bros. wander some world maps and will attack you if you enter the level they have wandered to. As with even rarer Fire Bros., and Sumo Bros., the easiest way to win is to let them throw their weapons, then jump on their heads or punch the block the are standing on from below. Sumo Bros. are the most dangerous of the bunch, because they have a ground pound-like attack that can stun Mario if he is nearby and break the blocks beneath them.

Snow Foes

These two enemies appear exclusively in icy levels. Snow Spikes can be beaten with a stomp or a fireball, but Snailicorns are impervious to most attacks. Push them off a ledge or toss a Koopa shell to defeat them.

Amphibious Antagonists

These foes patrol the surface of the water. Skeeters will try to drop bombs on Mario as he swims beneath them, and Spike Bass will leap from the water to attack Mario when he is near the surface. Skeeters are quite vulnerable from above, and are easy to stomp, but you will need a fireball or a Koopa shell to destroy a Spike Bass.

Trundling Traps

These spiked balls have been placed throughout Bowser Jr’s towers and castles. You cannot damage them (unless you are Mega Mario) – you will need to rely on skilled jumping to survive. At times they may even come in handy, rolling over block obstacles and dry bones to clear the way for you.

Floral Horrors

Most of the creatures in the Piranha Plant family live in pipes, from which they will pop out and retract at regular intervals if Mario is nearby. Some even shoot fireballs. You will usually need to use carefully timed movements to get past them or into their pipes, but you can destroy them with projectiles like fireballs and Koopa shells.
