The Lowdown On Apex Legends

Fortnite has the fun factor, and we all know that PUBG came first, but if you are after the best battle royale game Apex Legends is a serious contender. Now well into its second year, it is faster-paced and more intense than the competition, with the best run-and-gun gameplay in the business. We also love the line-up of legends, which rival Overwatch’s crew for cool.

In its first season, Apex was at risk of becoming boring, but the team at Respawn has fixed that with sweeping changes for each big update. Apex now has two maps to work with, which themselves have seen big transformations, while new legends have introduced new styles of play and strategies to try.

Apex is tougher and more demanding than Fortnite – and its grittier sci-fi approach isn’t for everyone – but it is every bit as exciting. Can you resist just one more drop?

Quick Tips

Learn the Legends

Find a legend or two who really suit your play style and get to grips with their abilities. It is these that make a difference between a top-five finish and an early exit.

Stick Together

Play well with your teammates, ping them weapon and enemy locations and revive them, and you have got a better chance of surviving. Go lone wolf ad you just won’t last.

Play Sneaky

While some legends work into straight offensive play styles, others reward sneaky behaviour. Learn how to use Caustic’s gas traps or bamboozle the enemy with Mirage’s decoys.

Move It!

Apex has changed a lot since Season 1. For a start, we now have two maps to contend with – the original King’s Canyon and the wintery World’s Edge.

Only one map is in play at any time, and the game can switch between them in the middle of a season, as it did in Season 4.

As in every battle royale, the biggest threat isn’t always another team – it could be the ring closing in on you, draining your health and shields in seconds!

If you cannot make it to safety across open ground, there could be a tunnel. Just watch out for enemy teams waiting to ambush.

Apex Legends shares its universe and some of its visual style with Respawn’s excellent Titanfall games. Evil corporations like Hammond Robotics and the IMC exist in both games, and some of the weapons carry over.

While Apex doesn’t do vehicles, there are ways to get to safety faster. You can use the zip lines and slide down slopes at speed or take a fast rope up to the red balloons (or jump towers) and relaunch yourself toward the ring.

The World’s Edge map even has a train you can catch – or land on if you are dropping in. It is well supplied with loot and weapons, and you can hop off whenever you like. After all, who is going to ask Caustic or Revenant for their ticket?
